From shipping containers to luxury cruise holidays, George Barter has seen the growth & diversification of the Irish travel industry since the 1960’s.

At the Irish Travel Awards, George was presented with the ‘Special Contribution to the Irish Travel Industry Award’, a bestowal after an entire career at the reins of a company that began with his great-grand-father, Joseph Barter in 1865.

For five decades, George has had a front row seat for the changes happening within the travel industry. He has taken every trend, development & obstacle in his stride, allowing his business to grow more & more.

From adventurous honeymoons to Mallorca in to 1970’s, to Camino Walks & River Cruising, to tightening the company’s belt during the economic down turn, to family holidays to visit Santa in Lapland, George has been witnessing every movement in an ever-changing industry.

As the oldest established travel agency in Ireland, J. Barter Travel has become a cornerstone within the Travel Industry in Ireland, and George Barter has played a huge role in building the foundations of that industry.

‘Customer is still at heart of what we do… Someone once said to me that travel is a happy business and once you can make your clients happy and they come back, it gets into your blood and it doesn’t leave’, George Barter said.

George described the recent award as a ‘wonderful honour’ & paid tribute to both his staff & fellow agents.

ITTN WINNERS OF TRAVEL AGENCY OF THE YEAR 2015

J Barter were crowned the winners of the Irish Travel Trade Network (ITTN) Travel Agency of the Year 2015 at the annual 24th Irish Travel Trade News Awards in Dublin. The sponsors of the Irish Travel Trade Awards were invited to nominate 25 agencies located in the four provinces, based on their knowledge of the agencies’ day-to-day workings.

Afterwards, four judges assessed the agencies and nominated a winner for each province. At the time we were selected as the Munster winners. Finally, among the 4 provinces the judges crowned J. Barter as the final winner of this prestigious award.

The Irish Travel Trade Awards reward excellence in service every year. We are delighted that our premium quality service towards our customers and suppliers, our notorious experience and our strategy to innovate was prized by travel and tourism professionals.

The Cork Business Association organises the highly successful Cork Business Awards which are presented to businesses that have contributed or promoted the enhancement of the commercial, cultural and civic life of Cork city. These awards are seen of one of the most prestigious accolades that can be bestowed on any sector of the of the Irish Business community.

J Barter Travel held off competition from a strong field of finalists to land the prestigious Cork "Business of the Year" award at the Cork Business Association’s annual gala dinner on Jan 23, 2016. We earned the award while celebrating an incredible 150 years in business. With a staff of professionals that has traveled to over 100 countries around the world, J Barter Travel continues to provide continuous training to all their travel consultants to further enhance their knowledge and professionalism in the travel industry.

The award will not only continue to motivate the customer service staff to be extremely responsive, but it will also enhance the efforts of the J Barter team to continue providing positive travel experiences and high quality service to all of their customers in and around Cork.

J Barter Travel won the Best Itaa General Marketing award of Irish Travel Industry Awards 2019 & 2020 in the category ITAA MEMBER AGENCY & PEOPLE AWARDS 2 years in a row. The Awards are designed to showcase excellence in the delivery of international travel services to both leisure and business customers travelling from Ireland. The Awards will commend a range of companies from air and sea transport companies, through Tour Operators, destination representatives and specialist service providers to the trade.
