How to go solo traveling when you don't know where to start

7 November 2024

solo traveling is not as intimidating as it might seem

Do you want to embrace independence and explore on your own, without worrying about matching vacation days or schedules with your usual travel partner?

Have you been wanting to try solo travel for a long time but feel too scared and you don't know where to start?

Well, I’m here to tell you solo traveling is not as intimidating as it sounds and much easier than you might think!

Luckily, solo traveling is becoming more common

A woman is jumping in the air on a beach at sunset.

We’ve all seen the growing trend on social media of solo travelers exploring the world, discovering new places, and creating unforgettable memories. Maybe you’ve been dreaming about it too - imagining setting off on your own adventure, free to go where you want, when you want.

But it’s also normal to feel a bit scared or uncertain. I get it! It can be intimidating to travel on your own for the first time (and even the second or third time), I promise that the excitement outweighs the fear!

If you’re curious but hesitant, you’re not alone. I’ve put together some tips to help you feel more prepared and confident, so you can turn that dream of traveling solo into reality and experience the joy and freedom of it.

why you should travel on your own at least once

A snowboarder is jumping in the air over a snowy mountain.

Traveling alone isn’t just about seeing new places - it’s about truly discovering yourself. When you venture out on your own, you’re faced with challenges and decisions that are yours alone to navigate. There’s no one else to rely on, which might sound intimidating at first, but this is where the magic of solo travel lies. Every choice you make and every obstacle you overcome builds a unique sense of confidence that’s hard to gain any other way. You learn to trust your instincts, handle unexpected situations, and adapt to whatever comes your way.

Solo travel also teaches resilience and self-reliance. You become comfortable in your own company, savoring moments of solitude while building confidence in your ability to face new experiences head-on. Whether you’re navigating a new city, meeting people from different cultures, or finding a quiet café to reflect, each experience deepens your understanding of yourself.

Most importantly, solo travel gives you a profound sense of freedom and independence that goes beyond the journey itself. You come back with more than just memories - you return home with a fresh perspective on life, a belief in your own abilities, and a greater sense of who you are and what you’re capable of achieving.

One of the most rewarding parts of solo travel is stepping out of your comfort zone, or as some say, “jumping over your own shadow.” Traveling alone encourages you to connect with others in ways you might not otherwise. Whether it’s joining a group hike, chatting with locals, or meeting fellow travelers, these encounters can lead to genuine friendships. You’ll be surprised at how quickly bonds form when you share experiences on the road, and the confidence you gain in connecting with others will stay with you long after you’re back home.

tips for solo travel

A person with a backpack is walking on top of a mountain.

Start with little things

Start small and close to home

If you’re feeling nervous, start with a weekend trip somewhere nearby. This gives you a taste of solo travel without the added stress of a long flight or foreign language. Starting small helps build confidence and makes each trip feel more achievable. A nearby city or countryside escape can be just what you need to get comfortable.

Plan some, but leave room for spontaneity

While solo travel requires a bit of planning, don’t overdo it. Pick a destination, book your accommodation, and map out a few must-do activities. Leave some open time for spontaneous adventures - you can change plans on a whim, follow local recommendations, or explore a place you stumble upon.

Choose the right destination for you

Consider what kind of experience you want. Some places are more solo-travel-friendly than others, especially for first-time travelers. Cities with reliable public transportation, like Tokyo or Amsterdam, make getting around easy. Friendly, walkable cities like Lisbon or Melbourne offer safe, social atmospheres.

act smart

Pack smart and light

Packing for solo travel is all about essentials. Since it’s just you, keep things light and manageable. Bring versatile clothes, a good book, and any essentials you may need. A comfortable backpack instead of a heavy suitcase can be a great choice if you’ll be moving around.

Stay connected, but not too much

Staying in touch with family and friends is reassuring, but don’t let it prevent you from fully experiencing solo travel. Check in when needed, but try to embrace the independence and focus on being present.

Believe in yourself

Get comfortable dining alone

Dining alone can feel intimidating, but it can also be enjoyable. Bring a book, journal, or people-watch while you’re out. Many restaurants welcome solo diners, and some even have bar seating where it’s easy to chat with others if you feel like being social.

Be open to meeting people

Solo travel often leads to amazing connections. Joining group activities like walking tours or cooking classes is a great way to meet others naturally. Hostels, cafes, and local events also offer easy social opportunities—don’t be afraid to say a friendly hello or ask where someone’s from. Many solo travelers, especially in hostels, are happy to chat and connect, even locals often enjoy sharing their culture with visitors. Embrace these moments, as they can lead to unforgettable friendships and shared experiences along your journey!

Trust yourself and embrace the unexpected

Traveling solo is an incredible way to build self-confidence. Trust your instincts, stay aware of your surroundings, and be open to new experiences. The ups and downs of solo travel are the moments you’ll remember most, and they will help you grow.

prioritize your safety

Safety is key when traveling solo, and a few precautions can go a long way in ensuring you feel secure and confident throughout your journey. Start by sharing your travel plans and location with a friend or family member who can check in on you if needed. Many smartphones have location-sharing features that make this easy to set up.

While out exploring, be mindful of your surroundings, especially in unfamiliar areas. Avoid isolated spots, like dark alleys or quiet streets at night, and try to stick to well-lit, busier areas. For accommodation in hostels or shared spaces, consider bringing a small lock for added security - many hostels provide lockers, and a sturdy lock helps ensure your belongings stay safe.

Above all, trust your instincts. If a situation or person doesn’t feel right, don’t hesitate to remove yourself and seek help if needed. Keeping these simple safety practices in mind can help you enjoy your travels to the fullest while staying confident and secure on the road.

conclusion

A woman in a white dress is riding a black horse on the beach.

Solo travel is more than just a journey to a new place; it’s a journey into self-discovery. When you set out on your own, every decision is yours, every challenge faced builds resilience, and every quiet moment brings a deeper understanding of who you are. The freedom to explore the world on your terms lets you return not only with memories of new places and experiences but with an enduring confidence in yourself and a fresh perspective on life.

Along the way, you’ll find that solo travel is also a powerful reminder of our shared humanity. The connections you make - with fellow travelers, with locals, and even with yourself - become some of the most meaningful parts of the journey. Every solo traveler starts out with the same uncertainties, but through open-mindedness and a willingness to reach out, you’ll make friendships easily that lighten up your journey and your life in ways you never expected.

As you step out of your comfort zone, you’ll realize that solo travel isn’t about being alone; it’s about embracing independence, discovering strength, and building confidence that will serve you far beyond your travels. So take that first step with courage, knowing that the world awaits, ready to welcome you. You’ve got this, and your adventure is just beginning.

So, are you ready to start your solo travel journey? If you’ve already ventured out on your own or have questions, we’d love to hear about it in the comments - share your experience or ask away!

Solo cruising is a great way to experience the freedom and fulfilment that comes with travelling alone. Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) offers an experience created especially with solitary travellers in mind, whether you're an introvert seeking peaceful reflection or a social butterfly hoping to meet like-minded adventurers. Here are some reasons why NCL is the best cruise line for those travelling alone, whether you're thinking about taking a solo cruise for the first time or you're an experienced traveller searching for something new. Studio Cabins: Designed with Solo Travelers in Mind One of the biggest challenges for solo cruisers on most cruise lines is the cost. Typically, single travellers are charged a "single supplement," which means they pay nearly the same as two people sharing a room. But NCL has an innovative solution for this with its Studio Cabins. Available on several ships, these cabins are not only budget-friendly but also thoughtfully designed for the solo traveller. Cosy yet modern, Studio Cabins feature everything you need in a compact space—comfortable beds, private bathrooms, and ambient lighting that creates a relaxing atmosphere. Plus, these rooms have access to an exclusive Studio Lounge, where solo travellers can socialize, enjoy a cup of coffee, or even plan excursions together.
