Let's face it, long flights can be a test of patience. But fear not, with a little preparation and the right tools, you can transform that seemingly endless journey into a productive or delightfully restful experience. Here's your survival guide to staying busy (and maybe even getting ahead) on those long hauls.
What better time to chill and catch up on your favourite shows and the movies you’ve been meaning to watch. Podcasts and audiobooks are also brilliant ways to stay entertained or even educate yourself on a topic of interest. Make sure to download them in order to watch or listen offline while in the sky. If technology isn’t your thing then a good book, journaling or adult colouring books can be relaxing activities to pass the time. Pack travel-friendly games like Sudoku or crosswords to challenge yourself or a seatmate (with permission, of course!).
The good thing about long haul flights is the chance to tick off a few things on your ‘To Do’ list while still having time to relax. What better time to get a few tasks out of the way that you’ve been putting off. Pack a portable charger, noise-cancelling headphones, and a blue light filter for your devices to ensure you are set up for success.
COMFORT CHAMPIONS
There’s nothing worse than being uncomfortable on a long haul flight. Wear loose-fitting clothing and different layers to ensure you can adapt to the changes in temperature (planes often tend to be quite cold!). Pack an inflatable neck pillow, eye mask, and cosy socks for added comfort. A toothbrush can be a quick way to feel refreshed mid flight.
STAYING HEALTHY: BEAT THE CABIN FEVER
Drink plenty of water throughout the flight to avoid dehydration. Packing an empty reusable water bottle to refill after security will be a lifesaver! Get up and walk around the cabin every hour or so to stretch your legs and improve circulation. Simple breathing exercises can help combat stress and improve focus on tasks at hand or allow you to relax and nod off for a few hours.
BONUS TIP: EMBRACE THE DOWNTIME!
Sometimes, the most productive thing you can do is nothing at all. Let yourself relax, listen to calming music, or simply gaze out the window. After all, a well-rested mind is a productive mind! Disconnect from the world and take the time to practise mindfulness or get a good sleep in prior to a fun filled holiday.
