We will visit Gothic ruins, medieval castles and experience accounts of the real Dracula by visiting the fortress of Bran Castle or otherwise known as Dracula’s Castle and the Tomb of Dracula.
In addition to this we will experience Transylvania’s multi-ethnic heritage (Romanian, German and Hungarian) in the folk costumes, architecture, and cuisine. Colourful centuries old traditions are alive and well in the towns and villages of Transylvania.
People here still make a living at such time-honoured occupations as shepherds, weavers, blacksmiths, and carpenters. Small family-owned shops offer antiques and fine hand made products by local artisans and artists at low prices. This tour will appeal to those who want to try something completely different from the usual mass tourist destinations.
Day 1 - Travel to Bucharest
We depart Dublin on our direct scheduled flight to Bucharest. Upon arrival, we will be greeted by our tour leader, who, along with our local guide, will accompany the group throughout the trip. Afterward, we will be transferred by coach to Sinaia, where we will stay for 5 nights
Day 2 - Castle Peles / Pelsior and Sinaia
After breakfast we travel to Castles Peles and Pelisor which was built by Queen Maria of Romania from the family of Saxe Coburg and Gotha. The setting is truly spectacular as they are surrounded by the Carpathian mountains. Our afternoon is free to enjoy Sinaia. Over the years our clients have enjoyed their stay in this beautiful town. There are excellent shops and restaurants with very reasonable prices.
Day 3 - Draculas Castle
Today we visit the world-famous 12th century Draculas Castle with its stunning location perched high on top of a 200 foot rock. We always visit in the morning as Count Dracula sleeps during the day so we don’t want to disturb him. We return to our hotel mid afternoon giving you plenty of time to visit the castle and explore the markets in the village of Bran.
Day 4 - Tomb of Dracula
After breakfast we depart our hotel to visit the tomb of Dracula in the remote monastery on the beautiful Lake Snagov. It is believed that Draculas decapitated body was found in the nearby woods by the monks of Snagov monastery and brought here to be buried. You can pay your respect at his tomb which is located at the altar footsteps and admire the beautiful frescoes which date back to the 15th century. We then take a stunning mountain drive passing through unspoiled Romanian villages to Targoviste, former capital of Wallachia where we can visit the 14th century Princely Court and Chindiei Watchtower. The Princely Court served as the capital of Wallachia, where Count Dracula ruled. It was here that he impaled a great many disloyal court members after inviting them to a celebratory feast. Chindiei Watchtower now houses an exhibition illustrating Count Draculas life. We return to our hotel late afternoon allowing us plenty of time to enjoy this undiscovered historic town.
Day 5 - Brasov
We visit the medieval city of Brasov and our local guide will do a short walking tour of the old city. It is ringed by the Carpathian Mountains and is known for its ancient Saxon walls and towers that enclose the city. Particularly impressive is the old market square and its cobbled streets. Our afternoon is free to soak up the atmosphere of this historic city.
Day 6 - Return flight home
