This itinerary takes you on a cycling adventure along the French Camino, the most famous of all the Camino de Santiago routes, from the historic city of Ponferrada to Santiago de Compostela. Ride though a richly varied landscape from the vineyards of El Bierzo to the mountainous borderlands of Galicia to the wooded countryside so typical of the Camino’s final stages. Discover fascinating historical towns and villages while gaining a rare insight into the diverse culinary and cultural traditions of the Camino.
Your journey starts in Ponferrada, capital of the Bierzo winemaking region and the last major town on the French Way before Santiago de Compostela. Its most famous sight is without doubt the stunning 13th-century Templar Castle.
Overnight: Ponferrada
Leave Ponferrada and cycle through the vineyards of El Bierzo as far as the impressive medieval town of Vilafranca del Bierzo. Follow a river valley before entering Galicia and tackling the climb to the mythical mountain village of O Cebreiro. Take a relaxing evening stroll among the traditional stone-and-hay dwellings known as pallozas
Overnight: Cebreiro
Descend from O Cebreiro and follow a nice undulating trail with beautiful views of the surrounding mountainous landscape. Wonderful native forests, charming rural villages and stone-built architectures vie for your attention. Throw in traditional raised granaries, standing crosses and Romanesque churches—this is Galicia at its purest.
Overnight: Sarria
Today you will cycle along quiet country backroads through woods and hamlets as far as Portomarin. From there, the track winds through a rural terrain with ups and downs before reaching the town of Palas de Rei, where you can enjoy a nice traditional dinner.
Overnight: Palas de Rei
Today’s stage is similar to previous days as your wheels roll through thick eucalyptus and oak forests, peaceful creeks and historical towns and villages such as Boente, Ribadixo de Abaixo and Arzúa.
Overnight: Pedrouzo
Your short final stage weaves between minor roads and narrow lanes before reaching Santiago de Compostela, capital of Galicia and home to the tomb of the Apostle Saint James.
Overnight: Santiago de Compostela
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the end of your Camino adventure.
